What will happen to North Kansas City site without Royals?

Even though the Kansas City Royals have turned their focus to a new ballpark in Jackson County, elected officials and developers don’t expect the almost 100 acres considered for a stadium in nearby North Kansas City to sit fallow.

“The last update we had received from the Kansas City Royals was that they considered our negotiations to be on hold, that they still consider North Kansas City a viable option, and if things don’t work out in Jackson County, they plan to come back and resume negotiations with Clay County,” Commissioner Jason Withington said.

Even if the Royals stay in Jackson County, North Kansas City remains poised for its “fair share” of new development investment over time, in the words of an Axiom Strategies campaign launched last year to draw a baseball stadium to 90-plus acres assembled by the Merriman family of Financial Holding Corp.

The properties now house industrial, office and commercial buildings, plus land sites, originally owned by Northtown Devco. The Merrimans quietly bought acreage north of 16th Avenue as Armour District LLC, in a broader September 2022 sale that saw other sites acquired by Dallas-based ATCap Partners.
