A new substation will be used to ramp up electric capacity for future industrial development in De Soto.
On Thursday, the De Soto City Council unanimously voted to rezone 53 acres near 115th Street and String Town Road from county rural to an industrial district. That designation allows for the creation of the new electric substation.
Evergy Inc. plans to build a second substation on the former Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant, now called Astra Enterprise Park.
The planned Atlantic substation will provide 345 kilovolts of power to the area. The utility company wants to build the new substation to the south of its Pacific substation, which is located near Panasonic’s $4 billion electric-vehicle battery factory.
The Atlantic substation would be sandwiched between Johnson County park land to the east and a proposed solar development to the west.
