BBQ, beer sales keep Kansas City businesses busy

KANSAS CITY, Kan. — A Super Bowl weekend deserves a super spread.

Party planners across Chiefs Kingdom are getting ready for their Super Bowl Sunday feasts, which often have beer and barbecue on the menu. Smoke, sauce and suds are the ingredients for a profitable weekend at restaurants and liquor stores.

Managers at Slap’s BBQ in Kansas City, Kansas, are slammed with orders for ribs, brisket and other meats.

Joe Pearce, who owns the popular restaurant on Strawberry Hill, said he’s had to turn off online orders, since $10,000 in advance purchases are already lined up. The restaurant will be open Sunday if you don’t mind to stand in line outside.

“We’re planning on that 300-400 rounds of ribs. We already have about 175 presold for Sunday. We’ll get those cooked first thing and cook as many as we can for Sunday,” Pearce said Friday.

Chiefs fans are also seeking their favorite beers for football’s biggest day. Liquor stores and grocery outlets across the metro have plenty of beer ready to go.

Stacy Franklin, beer manager at Plaza Liquor, said she’s doubled the store’s beer order from distributors twice since Monday. The store has plenty of domestic and craft beers ready to go. Franklin said her store has 500 cases of tasty suds ready to sell.

“I do not expect to see a lot of what we have on the floor and in the coolers Monday morning. It’s just not going to be here. It’s something we plan for trying to stock up twice a week,” Franklin said.

Both managers we spoke with said Super Bowl Sunday will likely deliver a 30-40% uptick in business over a normal weekend day. Franklin said planning for annual Super Bowl demand is getting easier — since the Chiefs keep playing for championships.
