Royals owner John Sherman speaks on stadiums impact on Crossroads

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Last week, the Kansas City Royals laid out a rendering of their plan to build a new stadium located in the Crossroads District.

The stadium will be located next to the new South Loop Link park over I-670 and then across from the T-Mobile Center in downtown Kansas City.

This created an uproar amongst many, considering the new stadium would cause Crossroads businesses to be demolished along with the Kansas City Star building.

“We’re very excited about that site but I would say that one of the unfortunate things is that this news was kind of sudden to some of the folks in the Crossroads,Royals owner John Sherman said.

“We’re in the process right now of sitting down with people that are affected by this and making sure they understand that we’re there to kind of help with the transition.”

Jackson County residents can vote “yes” or “no” on the April 2 ballot on whether or not they want to fund the stadium sales tax. Early voting began on Monday.

“Feel really good about the vote and about the election, but also sensitive to some parts of the community that we’re trying to spend some time with,” Sherman said.

“We’re just trying to listen and have empathy and try to help them in their transition,” Sherman said.

The stadium will be the focal point of an entire ballpark district estimated to be $2 billion.
